Being here....

While getting started this morning, I heard an interesting interview on the radio. Since it was early and I wasn't paying optimum attention, I didn't catch the name of the person being interviewed.

They were chattering on about being here, about living on this planet, global warming, consumerism ~ all of those various topics.

One of the interviewees said that we should ask ourselves this question:

Have I been a good houseguest?

Good question.

Peace,

That is one hell of a question. David Suzuki, one of my heroes, has been asking the same question for years. Check out his website-really worth a visit.

Yeah. I haven't been the best one. But I'm trying...

Here comes that Mindfulness again. Good reminder.

Others I know have been going to help out with my terminally ill friend. I can't go, but I know that I wouldn't be an ideal candidate anyway. I'm still too selfish and oblivious of others, but I've been giving the situation a lot of thought, which is sort of a step in the same direction as your question is heading.

That's a great question, Chani, and gives good food for thought. I have areas that need improving and I'm aware of them. I guess that's a step in the right direction.

De, it disturbs me to read you talking this way about yourself. I don't even know if you'll come back to see this comment, but I feel the need to say it anyway.

You are not selfish!

You have two children to raise and a husband. That naturally comes first. While you may not be able to physically be *with* your terminally ill friend, that doesn't negate your good thoughts for her, your support of others, your support of her within the context you have available is plenty enough.

The idea that we have to be all things to all people is just another lie of western culture.

Don't buy it. You are fine.. just as you are.

And I'd be willing to bet the old homestead here that your friend feels the same way.

Peace,

Caro, I will definitely look it up. Sounds great!

Sushil, that might very well be the interview I was hearing. It was some alternative radio station.

Your references are great and I agree with 99.9% of it. I'm curious though.. what are you doing in India to prevent American corporate hegemony? It's great to define the problem but as long as India allows the offenders to keep coming, the problem will never be solved.

Quite a dilemma, eh? Jobs v. sustainable environment.

MsPea, I'm not the best one, either. The learning goes on.

Mary, definitely a step in the right direction. Something is pulling me more in that direction, toward going a bit more gently on the earth. There are some things I'm already doing that certainly have impacted my life in a positive way. There are some things I have yet to even consider. :)

I believe my attitude toward our planet has always been respectful and appreciative, but there is always room for improvement and I keep working on it.

Hi Chani, thanks for stopping by my blog the other day!

I fervently wish more people would ask this question of themselves.

Pam, I think we all do our best. Well, most of us. :) (see my post about corporations... blecht! pooey! :)

Gina, I'm very glad I stopped by your blog! It was a pleasant surprise. I've seen and enjoyed your comments on various forums.

OK, Ok. I'm chuckling here, which is an improvement. Today has been a very cranky day, but perhaps you've headed me off at the pass. Thanks!

Excellent question. As always, you make me think.

I try to make daily, conscious efforts in that direction. Sometimes it is easier than others. Thanks for the reminder!
