Spitzer, Spitzer....

Are we surprised?

Tell me you're not!

In watching this yesterday, the first thing I noticed was the decidedly unhappy look on his wife's face. Can any of us even begin to imagine her humiliation?

I, for one, am sick of hearing about men and their inability to control their sexual urges. I'm tired of women being hurt by it.

I don't believe for one minute that Spitzer is really sorry. I think he's sorry he got caught!

He risked his family's well-being, risked his wife's health (STDs, disease, etc), risked his children's well-being since they will lose faith in him and he damaged his community.

Shame on him!

I would love to jump on the "men are horrible" train...but women do this, too.

And yes, he screwed up, and yes, shame on him. But let's not throw all men into the shit heap.

I believe he is only sorry because he got caught and if I were his wife I'd leave him. I'm sick of woman doing that tired "stand by your man crap." Maybe if he had stood up and been a man she wouldn't have to stand up there looking unhappy!!!

He only got caught because he's incredibly stupid and I do feel sorry for his children. But I certainly know married couples who have "an understanding," so I'm much more hesitant to judge his behavior vis a vis his wife.

I don't know the guy, and I haven't been been keeping up with the news, but I get your drift and agree.

I agree with you, Chani. But does anyone know if she is guilty of the same? LOL!

I have a hard time understanding why she is standing by his side after a blow like this one.

I didn't know anything about this governor but I think when you are in a position in the public eye, a great deal more scrutiny should be had... if not for your own image but to protect your family!

Geez... what a mess.

I posted about this on MOMocrats today. I am perplexed about her at his side. She does not seem supportive, she seems compelled.

Mamma Loves made one of the best points about this: what is it about this job that seems to so attract men who will do this?

I know men and women both cheat, but male politicians...it seems a different animal.

Oh, ME TOO. Me too.

People mystify me. On so many levels.

I can't know the whole story, but i can tell you that there's no F@#*ing way i would be standing by his side.

Gone Baby Gone.

I agree with flutter but, man, I would have a really hard time standing up beside him were I his wife.

She's at his side because she's been advised to be there by an army of people who are trying to salvage whatever they can. For her benefit, too.

Or maybe she's at his side because she expected him to actually turn his face toward hers. Maybe she expected that he would look her in the eye and genuinely apologize--to HER--on national television.

But that isn't what he did. He didn't even accept responsibility for his actions by NAMING them.

Maybe he's always been a narcisstic egomaniac. Most politicians are. If that is the case, perhaps she married him because he was powerful and wealthy. And if this was the case, well then....lesson learned, I guess.

Who knows why she stood by his side? I only know I wouldn't be standing there. And neither would he. Because he wouldn't be standing by the time I got done with him.

Men have a wonderful ability to lie to themselves and think they can get away with such disloyal behaviour. (Believe me I know!)

It would be nice for once if the woman held the press conference and expose her husband as a cad and that he had been shown the door.

Women "standing by their man" just makes me have less respect for them.

I wonder if I am the only one who disbelieved Hillary when she reassured a questioner that, during her Presidency their will be no scandal involving Bill. Hummm! As Dr Phil likes to say, "Past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour."

I didn't see any news coverage, just the picture in my local paper. Her face was calm, unfurrowed (well, it should be a word), and wondering. Probably wondering WTF she was doing there.

She was described as "shell-shocked." If I were shell-shocked, I wouldn't go stand there. I'd need time to sort it out.

For me personally, prostitution is one of the more offensive /incomprehensible situations. I just don't get it.

Even intelligent women, and his wife certainly is that - Harvard-trained lawyer- can be coerced by themselves into standing by men who don't deserve it. Accomplishment doesn't necessarily bring self-confidence, sadly.

I hope she leaves him, though. His apology wasn't convincing and I also think he's only sorry he got caught.

I have to google him and I got to that scanned copies of affidavits...that happens here too. And most often than not, wives always come out stronger by being there...staying beside their husbands...I'd love to think she is doing that for her children. The man (he in this context) deserves all the shame but his family certainly don't!

I have to agree with Angela... I would not be there standing beside my man... because the man would not BE standing when I got done with him. I may be small (4'11") but he DOES have to sleep sometime.

Although... it doesn't seem like he chose to spend his nights WITH his wife, did he? Hmm. Oh well, I'd find a way to hurt him somehow. *shrug*

She DOES look haggard and drawn... and I can't even IMAGINE what his daughters are going through.

I hope she leaves him.

As a woman who has been in a somewhat similar situation, I imagine that she is still in shock. The life she thought she had was a lie. She hopes that if she just goes along, she will wake up and find that this is only a nightmare. They get the woman to publicly 'stand by her man' because she is in too much shock to think for herself. When the shock wears off, I hope she gets really clear on what is est for her and for her children.

The only shock she is in is the same as her husband - that its the end of his political career and his comeuppance for having prosecuted a few call-girl rings himself as the attorney general.

Only a complete fool would not realize her husband was dipping his johnny in a few other ponds. At least he wasn't cheating on her. That's right, hookers aren't cheating because they aren't emotional attachments - N$A - no strings attached. As Charlie Sheen once said - I don't pay for sex, I pay for the girl to leave afterwards. And STDs aren't even on the list - when you pay $4K/night, the girls come with a health certificate.

No one can speculate as to why she stood by him. And I don't think anyone can judge. It seems that a lot of people are only seeing Spitzer's act and not his marriage or family. If they were childless, it would probably be a different situation. But this family has to go through public humiliation over the prostitution as well as their husband's/dad's betrayal. I think it was a prudent thing for Mrs. Spitzer to stand by her man, at least publicly. Not because women should just take it. But because her family has already been through enough with the scandal. Her daughters and herself certainly don't need a public breakdown of their family, in addition to what Spitzer has done to them. If Ms. Spitzer had not shown up, the media would have made a big deal about that. The public would have said, Oh, she's really taking it hard. Their family does not need that extra attention. Right now, it's wise to just deal with what is at hand, the scandal and its effects of their family. Once the scandal has died down and the daughters have somewhat come to terms with what happened, Ms. Spitzer will be more free to do whatever she feels is right, out of the public eye.
