Sacred Life Weekend: Feed Your Head....

Friday afternoon, I received "The Power of Myth" DVD set from Netflix. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to watch it and found it so entrancing that I listened to it the entire day. Listening to it is like having the richest, healthiest most satisfying meal.

Taking a break from that, I read "The Yoga of Eating" which really changed my thinking about so many things. It is a gentle, kind approach to feeding our souls so that we don't have to feed our bellies in quite the same way. :)

He speaks against self-denial and discipline, citing the origin of that type of thinking, and instead suggests that we begin to see our bodies and our minds as the same, not separate. It is not a battle between the body and mind - it is not a dichotomy - but instead learning the language of our bodies so we can provide for them and care for them more effectively.

I've just begun "Ascent of Humanity" by the same author. So far, it is wonderful! I'll write more when I've finished it.

The knowledge of body and soul being connected has been in our minds all the time, yet we don't seem to have the access to use that knowledge effectively. I'm interested in learning what this book says about it - might save me the time I don't have to read it :)

This is off topic, but I noticed the blog Zen Habits is asking for good travel tips to Thailand, and I thought you might have something to contribute. :o)

What is the power of myth about? Is that from the Joeseph Campbell collection of works? I love Netflix. The books sound interesting as well especially, "The Yoga of Eating". All the best. M

Oooh, the power of myth sounds right up my alley. I recently read Marianne Williamson's "The Age of Miracles". It came with a CD of meditations that I've been enjoying listening to. Kinda gets my day started off right.

It's true that when our souls are not nourished, we look for other ways to fill ourselves up or numb ourselves down.

Campbell never loses his lustre and intrigue. I'm glad you spent such a deeply satisfying weekend. Many of my best friends are books.

"The Yoga of Eating" sounds really interesting. I've studied a lot about the connection between our minds and bodies, more in connection with weight lifting, but I've found that everything is connected in that way. How we think, what we eat, our feelings, our physical performance...it's all linked and a change in one area influences the other areas and not always in ways you expect.

I've never managed to understand self-denial and discipline. It sets us up against ourselves, fragmenting ourselves, turning into our own enemy.
So I'm loving what you are saying here, about it not being a battle, in fact it not being separate really, the mind and the body.
Such provocative and wise words here.
Feeding ourselves, knowing what we are truly hungry for, this is so healing.

Oh, nothing much to add today. Just a note to say hello and I smiled reading about your lovely experience with Campbell. Sukhavati, yummmmm. :)

Also, this brought tears:
It's true that when our souls are not nourished, we look for other ways to fill ourselves up or numb ourselves down.

So true.

Sending Light.

Hi Chani,

Would love to know more about this.

I need help... "It is a gentle, kind approach to feeding our souls so that we don't have to feed our bellies in quite the same way. :)"

That's a powerful message.

i did a performance piece/play that we developed ourselves based on several creation myths from around the world, so I watched that series. Joseph Campbell is amazing.
